Lion swimmers wrap competition at Bucknell Invitational

Lewisburg, PA…The College of New Jersey's men's and women's swimming and diving teams wrapped action at the Bucknell University Invitational on Sunday night. The Lions were the lone Division III school competing in the two-day event. TCNJ's men's team posted a fourth place finish, while the Lion women took sixth place.

Men's Highlights
Despite their Division III status, the Lions posted some impressive times and posted a number of first place finishes on the night. Rookie Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) won the 500 freestyle race in 4:32.40, shattering TCNJ's school record set in 2008 by Sophomore Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) took (4:35.68). Medvecky would take second in 4:38.97. Senior Mike Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) posted a time of 4:46.55 to take seventh place in the race.

TCNJ also won the 400 freestyle relay as the foursome of rookie Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine), Vernoia, senior Tom Nawrot (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), and sophomore Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) added a performance of 3:06.98.

The Lions finished in third in the 200 medley relay in 1:34.01 as Nawrot, junior Myles O'Connor (Santa Monica, CA), Medvecky, and Kircher combined.

O'Connor won the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.28, while fellow Lions sophomore Rob Moran (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) took 11th in 2:15.61, junior Eric Rohrs (Congers, NY/Clarkstown High North) took 12th in 2:17.87 and sophomore Andrew Hessler (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) took 14th in 2:19.41.

Nawrot added a second place finish in the 100 freestyle with a time of 46.33, while Vernoia took fourth in 46.87 and Kircher took seventh in 47.51. Molloy picked up a fifth in the 200 backstroke in 1:55.62, while Medvecky took fourth in the 100 butterfly in 52.26, sophomore Aaron Moskovich (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) finished in seventh in 52.55 and O'Connor took 13th in 53.79.

In the 400 individual medley, sophomore Joe Tseng (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) took 10th in 4:12.11, while sophomore Tim Rauch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) added an 11th place finish with his time of 4:13.13.

Women's Highlights

The Lion women were led on the day by rookie Traci Hofer (Millville, NJ/Millville) who picked up 12th place in the 100 freestyle race in 54.99.
