Willingboro, NJ... The doubles team of Jonathan Yu (Hamilton Square, NJ/Steinert) and Dean Thompson (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) advanced to the semifinals as The College of New Jersey men’s tennis team continued play at the 2009 Fall Eastern Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals on Saturday at Millcreek Park.
The Lion pairing beat Vassar College’s Josh Jasso and Greg Katz by the score of 8-3 and followed that up with an 8-6 victory against Hamilton College’s Jon Franzel and Andrew Libin to move into the semifinals. In the semis, TCNJ’s duo will face third-seeded Carl-Eric Girardin and Richard Granger from Skidmore College.
The tandem of Steven Fernandez (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and TJ Riley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Moorestown) posted an 8-6 victory over Austin Armstrong and Ryan Kovaleski from the University of Rochester. The team then fell to fourth-seeded Taylor Borda and Josh Rifkin of Ithaca College.
In singles play, Stewart Fernandez (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) started the day with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 triumph over Borda, but then fell 6-0, 6-0 to top-seeded Patrick Whitner of New York University.
Stewart Fernandez faced 15th-seeded Max Willner of Vassar College in the round of 16 and fell by the scores of 6-4, 6-0.
Freshman Keith Goldstein (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) took on third-seeded Girardin in his match on Saturday and dropped identical 6-3 sets.
