Box Score

Amherst, MA... A pair of first-half goals sparked The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team to a 2-0 triumph over Plattsburgh State in the opening round of the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday in Amherst, MA.

The win sends the Lions into the second round on Sunday where they will face the host Jeffs of Amherst College in a 1 p.m. start. Amherst advanced with a 3-0 victory over Eastern Connecticut State to improve to 13-3-1 on the year.

TCNJ (17-2-1) got off to a great start in the tournament as senior Jillian Casey (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) scored an unassisted goal just 4:12 into the game. The goal was her eighth of the season.

The Lions doubled that lead later in the half as sophomore Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) one-timed a cross off of the foot of Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant).

Those two goals were all the Lions needed as senior keeper Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) made a pair of saves for her 13th shutout of the season.

The Lions held a solid 25-3 advantage in shots

The loss capped Plattsburgh’s season at 10-6-1.
