Lions topple host Amherst to advance in NCAA Tournament

Amherst, MA... The College of New Jersey women’s soccer team broke open a close one-goal game exploding for three goals in the second as the Lions dealt host Amherst College a 4-0 defeat on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The win propels TCNJ (18-2-1) into the section round of the tournament where they will face undefeated Williams College (19-0). The Ephs advanced with a 2-1 win over Oneonta State. That game will be played at Williams College on Saturday, November 21 in an 11 a.m. start.

The Lions scored the only goal of the opening 45 minutes as freshman Katie Landrigan (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) with 9:33 left before the intermission.

TCNJ kept things rolling in the second half as senior Jillian Casey (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern) scored 2:33 into the new frame with an assist from Briann McDonough (North Arlington, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy). That goal was Casey’s ninth of the season and second of the tournament.

The Lions sealed the game in the latter stages of the half scoring a pair of goal less than 10 minutes apart. Freshman Allyson Anderson (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant) made it 3-0 with an assist from Eva Gimello (Langhorne, PA/Neshaminy) and that was followed by a goal from Brittany McGinley (Cranford, NJ/Cranford). McGinley’s goal was her second in as many days and was set up by an assist from Alexa Rozzi (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Twp.).

Goalie Jessica Clarke (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) had a banner game for the Lions as she recorded a season-high nine saves to record the shutout. The shutout was her 14th of the season, which is also a career best.

Each team finished with 17 shots.

The loss ended Amherst’s season at 13-4-1.
