Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey wrestling team closed out the home portion of its schedule on a winning note as the Lions picked up a 47-6 triumph over visiting Springfield College on Sunday.
It was a fitting way for the talented group of seniors, who were honored prior to the match, to close out the home portion of their careers as they won all four of their dual meets this season in Packer Hall. Honored prior to the match were Jon Biango (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick), Tyler Branham (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny), Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mt. Olive), John Dinan (Nutley, NJ/Nutley), Greg Osgoodby (Waldwick, NJ/Waldwick), and Bill Tenpenny (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional).
The Lions, ranked 18th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III poll, are now 14-1 this season, while the 27th-ranked Pride fell to 9-8. This also marked the ninth time this season the Lions have taken on a ranked opponent and they have put together an impressive mark of 7-1-1 in those matches
The Lions got on a roll early as Danny Franke (Jackson, NJ/Freehold Boro) put the hosts in front 4-0 with a 12-2 victory at 125 and then Dan Hughes (Delran, NJ/Delran) increased that lead with a 6-3 decision over Springfield's Gary Henningsen (Chester, NJ/West Morris Mendham).
Tenpenny received a win via forfeit at 141 extending TCNJ's lead to 13-0, Branham then won by fall at 149 in 3:24. A second forfeit for the Lions at 157 increased their advantage to 25-0.
Sophomore Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) then won by fall in 4:29 followed by Osgoodby's 17-1 technical fall victory at 174. Those wins extended TCNJ's sizeable lead to 36-0.
The lead continued to grow as freshman Scott Kelley (Vineland, NJ/Sacred Heart) won by fall at 184 and freshman Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) followed with win by technical fall in 5:17 (17-1) at 197.
Springfield won the final bout of the dual as Chris Brown (East Hartford, CT/East Hartford) won by fall at heavyweight in 6:43.
TCNJ rounds out the regular season on Saturday, February 7 heading to the University of Scranton to take on the Royals as well as facing Oswego State.
