Glassboro, NJ…William Paterson used a pair of big innings to hand The College of New Jersey softball team its first loss in the 2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament scoring a 14-6 triumph over the Lions on Friday.

TCNJ (24-16) started out the five-inning game strong scoring four times in the first and adding another run in the second, but the Pioneers scored six times in the last of the third and then eight more in the fifth.

The Lions will face top-seeded and host Rowan University in an elimination game on Saturday at 11 a.m. The Profs also suffered their first setback of the tournament falling to fourth-seeded Ramapo College, 3-0.

In the top of the first, TCNJ struck first scoring four times with sophomore Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, NJ/John P. Stevens) providing the big hit plating two runs with a double.

In the second, the Lions made it 5-0 as senior Kelly Armstrong (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) drilled a solo home run, which was her team-leading fourth of the season.

The Pioneers then sent 10 batters to the plate in the third to take the lead scoring six times.

TCNJ tied the game at 6-all in the fourth as Armstrong doubled and scored on a base hit by Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood).

William Paterson had one big inning left as they pushed eight runs across in the fifth.

Armstrong finished the game going 2-for-3, while scoring twice and driving in one.
