Lakewood, NJ… The College of New Jersey and Elizabethtown College got to resume their NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional game on Saturday after a heavy fog halted the completion of the game from the night before. The Lions broke a tie in the seventh inning and came away with a 5-3 victory over the Blue Jays.
TCNJ (27-17-1) advanced to take on Keystone College with a chance to move into the championship game against top-seeded Kean University.
The Blue Jays capped their season at 29-15.
When action resumed on Saturday following the delay with the Lions leading 3-2, the Blue Jays pulled even with TCNJ in the bottom of the sixth as Eric Luff (Lincoln University, PA) doubled in a run.
The Lions quickly countered to regain the lead in the top of the seventh as freshman James Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) doubled a came around to score on a base hit up the middle by Jeff Toth (Parlin, NJ/Sayreville) to make it a 4-3 game.
In the eighth, TCNJ padded its lead with an insurance run as senior Adam Tussey (Brooklawn, NJ/Gloucester) hit a double into the gap in left scoring Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy).
Senior pitcher Pat Johnson (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) picked up the win throwing three innings of relief for the Lions improving to 3-0 on the year.
When the game originally started on Friday, the Lions scored twice in the first against the Blue Jays. Vince Mazzaccaro (Gloucester, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) accounted for both of those runs with a single through the left side scoring a pair.
The Blue Jays trimmed that lead in half in the bottom of the inning as Brian Kiernan (Garden City, NY) drove in a run with base hit.
Elizabethtown then knotted the score at two in the third as Tom Semanek (Swoyersville, PA) plated a run with a ground out to second.
TCNJ regained the lead in the fifth as Ruzich got hit by a pitch and came around to score on a double into the gap in right by junior Chris Esperon (Union. NJ/Union Catholic) for a 3-2 lead.
The game was then delayed in the sixth with the Lions batting and one out with a runner on second base with one out.
