Ewing, NJ...The College of New Jersey had a pair of student-athletes honored for their work in the classroom in addition to their efforts in their respective sports. Senior Haley Kutner (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Dwight Englewood) was named to CoSIDA's ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Women’s At-Large First Team, while classmate Katie Reuther (Toms River, NJ/Toms River) landed on a spot on the second team.
Kutner has shined both on and off the tennis court for the Lions as she was a four-time TCNJ Scholar-Athlete majoring in art history with a minor in psychology and a grade-point-average of 3.92. She started all four years at TCNJ and was named the 2005 NJAC Rookie of the Year and garnered 2008 All-American honors in doubles. She has been a part of four New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship teams and this season tied for the team lead with 18 victories in singles play and added 22 more in doubles play. She will now move onto the national ballot.
The Lions earned a bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Tournament and advanced to the second round scoring a 5-0 win over Lebanon Valley College to finish the season with an impressive 16-4 record.
Reuther, who boasts a 3.82 GPA with a bio medical engineering major, was a two-sport athlete at TCNJ as she excelled for both the field hockey and lacrosse teams. In field hockey, Reuther was 2008 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III All-America Third Team. She was also honored as the 2008 NJAC Midfielder of the Year and being tabbed to both the South Atlantic and All-NJAC first teams. She is a two-time NJAC all-conference selection and helped lead the Lions to their third consecutive NJAC Championship. Reuther finished third in the NJAC in overall assists (11).
This season, the Lions finished with an overall record of 16-3 and advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals.
This spring, she helped TCNJ advanced to the NCAA Division III quarterfinals as this team also capped the year with a mark of 16-3. She was tabbed as the NJAC Midfielder of the Year in addition to being a first all-conference selection.
Reuther was also the recipient of the 2007 and 2008 Fred O. Armstrong Award for the highest GPA in her major.
