Piscataway, NJ ... The College of New Jersey men's swimming and diving team dominated the competition to claim their fourth consecutive Metropolitan Conference Championship title. The Lions finished with a total of 1,528 points while the US Merchant Marine Academy University placed second with 1,121.5 points.
Junior Tom Medvecky (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was named the 2010 Swimmer of the Meet. Medvecky won three individual events and contributed to a pair of relay victories to lead the Lions. He placed first in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 4:37.11, the 100-yard butterfly (50.79), and the 200-yard fly (1:50.84). Medvecky broke his own TCNJ record in the 200-fly and posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time. He posted provisional qualifiers in his two other wins as well as in the 400-medley relay (3:22.61) and 800-yard freestyle relay (6:46.21).
Coach Brian Bishop was named 2010 Men's Coach of the Year. It was the fourth straight year Bishop has received the honor.
On Sunday, senior Myles O'Connor (Los Angeles, CA) punched his ticket to the NCAA championships posting an automatic qualifying time of 2:02.17 as he won the 200-yard breast stroke. Freshman Evan Paulan (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) registered an NCAA B-cut placing fourth in the event with a time of 2:08.12.
Junior Shawn Kircher (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) and sophomore Ryan Clark (Ocean City, NJ/St. Augustine) took the top two spots in the 100-yard freestyle event. The Lions duo each posted NCAA provisional times as Kircher posted a time of 45.91 and Clark finished in 46.24.
Senior James VanBiervliet (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) finished second in the 200-yard backstroke. His time of 1:53.33 earned him an NCAA B-cut. Freshman Mike Caputo (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) posted a NCAA provisional time placing second in the 1650 freestyle event finishing in 16:12.52.
Sophomore Mike Vernoia (Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata), Medvecky, Kircher, and Clark took first in the 400-free relay finishing in 3:04.03. Their finish was good for an NCAA B-cut.
Sophomore T.J. Burns (Clarks Summitt, PA/Abington) placed second in the 3-meter diving event posting a score of 478.80.
Lions swimmers who posted qualifying times will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships beginning March 17 at the University of Minneapolis.
