Piscataway, NJ ... The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team put forth three straight days of exceptional performance to claim their third consecutive Metropolitan Conference Championship title. The Lions tallied 1,390.5 points while The University of Bridgeport placed second with 1,009 points.
Junior Margaret Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) was named the 2010 Swimmer of the Meet. Molloy posted three, first-place finishes in individual events winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.76), 500-free (4:59.75), and 1650-free (17:14.13). Along with those three victories, she posted NCAA automatic qualifying times in each event and broke three TCNJ records.
Molloy also contributed to a first-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay race and a second-place finish in the 200-free relay. Both relay times were NCAA provisional qualifiers and also set new Lions' records.placed first in the 1650 freestyle event earning an NCAA automatic qualifying time finishing in 17:14.13. Molloy also shattered her own school record that she set in 2009.
Freshman Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) posted a new school record and automatic qualifying time for the NCAA in the 100-yard breast stroke while head coach Jen Harnett was named Coach of the Year for the third straight season.
On Sunday, sophomore
Laura Pierce (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hills West) won the 100-freestyle event posting an NCAA provisional time of 52.16. Senior
Christina Falcone (Newtown, PA/Notre Dame) placed third in the 200-butterfly posting a time of 2:10.91.
Freshman
Kristin Wykoff (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) posted an NCAA B-cut placing fourth in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:09.01.
Molloy, Pierce, Shangle, and
Melissa Hessler (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) broke the Lions school record that stood since 2003 in the 400 freestyle relay race. Their finish of 3:30.17 qualified for an NCAA provisional.
Next stop will be the NCAA Division III Championships for qualifying swimmers beginning March 17 at the University of Minneapolis.
