Men's Track & Field

Straight From the Lion's Mouth with Kyle Gilroy

Junior Kyle Gilroy
Question: How did you arrive at competing in the sport of track and ultimately the hurdles?

Kyle Gilroy: When I was in middle school, I watched my brother run track for our high school. I really enjoyed watching him run. My goal was to try to beat his times.

As a freshman in high school, our team went to the NYC Armory for our first meet. Without ever hurdling before, my coach threw me into the race with some really amazing runners. After getting my butt kicked, hurdling became something I wanted to master. I'm still far from mastering the event, I'm lucky to have an awesome team and an extremely experienced hurdle coach.

Q: Is it true you're a Biomedical Physics major? If so, explain what you intend to do with that degree?

KG:
Yes, I'm a Biomedical Physics major. With this degree, I could become an engineer or physicist dealing with medical based physics. Radiology, prosthesis research, ... most any kind of machinery that you'd find in a hospital. Since this field encompasses bio, chem, physics, and some engineering, it is possible I could go down one of those paths. I hope to go to grad school and eventually find a job up in North Jersey where my family lives.

Q: You recently had a birthday. How did you celebrate?

KG: For my birthday my parents took me to Houlihans located on RT 1. They bought me a much needed "new battery" for my phone. They also brought a whole bunch of fruit and snacks for me. Unfortunately I had a test that next day so I couldn't be with friends.

Q: What is that you like best about TCNJ?

KG:
The people here is what I like best about TCNJ. I've also been so lucky to have awesome teachers that have helped lead me in the right direction.

Q: How have your professors assisted in your development outside the typical passing of knowledge?

KG:
The physics department has really pushed me to do research as well as work incredible summer internships that will ultimately enhance my chances on getting into competitive graduate programs. Dr. Romulo Ochoa was able to get me to present research at an APS meeting in Washington DC. This type of experience is vital for successful undergrads.

Q: If you could take a guess as to coach Lindsey's three favorite musical artists, who would they be?

KG:
I had the privilege of racing coach Justin earlier this season. As he was warming up, I saw him dancing to something he was listening to on his ipod. If I were to guess what the band was, I would probably say it was something by Diana Ross, perhaps "I'm coming out" or something upbeat like that. I'm pretty sure he likes more modern stuff too, like 'Lil Wayne, and Puff Daddy.
