Greencastle, IN ... Members of The College of New Jersey women's track and field team performed well at the opening day NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships while the men's team put themselves in a promising position entering the final day of competition at tournament host DePauw University.
The women's distance medley relay team placed fourth overall with a time of 11:56.92 to earn the Lions five points in the overall standings.
Katie Nestor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands), Brielle Doremus (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex), Meryl Wimberly (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck), and
Michelle Wallace (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) legged out a hard-fought race to stake TCNJ with five points and 13th place at the end of the first day.
Senior
Priscilla Senyah (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville) posted a time of 8.16 in the 55-meter hurdles, which was the seond-best qualifying time overall heading into tomorrow's final race. The top qualifying time, produced by Elise Johnson of Williams College, was 8.12 which is only one-hundreth of a second better than Senyah's school-record time of 8.13 set at the ECAC Championships.
Junior
Kyle Gilroy (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford Twp.) will race tomorrow in the 55-meter hurdles thanks to his time of 7.62 in the prelimary heat. Gilroy is just more than a tenth of a second off the top time posted in the prelimaries and will look to take the title in tomorrow's final race.
Senor
Jianna Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) qualified for the finals with a finishing time of 2:14.77. Spadaccini will face top-seed Allison Chamberlain of Keene State College, who ran a phenomenal heat crossing the line at 2:10.81. Spadaccini, who was recently named Atlantic Region Track Athlete of the Year, posted a time of 2:11.07 this past weekend at the ECAC Championships.
Senior
Dennie Waite (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank Regional) will compete in the NCAAs tomorrow in the men's one-mile event. Wallace will also line up to race in the women's 5,000-meter event.
