Lions excel placing 9th at national championships

Minneapolis, Minn. … The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team staked their claim to being one of the top swimming programs in the country as they finished ninth overall at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships held in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

TCNJ registered 108 total points as four Lions' swimmers earned All-American honors during the four-day event. Sophomore Laura Pierce (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) and freshman Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) received national acclaim in individual events.

Pierce is an All-American for her sixth place finish in the 100-yard butterfly finishing the race in 56.11. She also earned the Lions four points finishing 13th overall in the 100-free with a time of 51.85 receiving honorable mention 

Kayleigh Shangle 2
Shangle received All-American honors in her first trip to the NCAAs with a fifth place finish in the 100-breast. Shangle was the lone freshman competing in the event and finished in 1:04.56.

Shangle joined Pierce, sophomore Traci Hofer (Millville,NJ/Millville), and senior Ashley Robb (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) to place sixth in the 200-medley relay team with a TCNJ school-record time of 1:45.76. The same group returned to race in the 200-freestyle relay and took fourth place with a time of 1:34.97.

Freshman Kristyn Wikoff (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) and junior Margaret Molloy (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) teamed up with Shangle and Pierce to place 13th in the 400-yard medley relay (3:54.50) to earn TCNJ eight points and earn All-American honorable mention. Molloy also earned a point in the 1650-free with a finishing time of 17:21.58.

Molloy, Melissa Hessler (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra), Shangle, and Pierce placed 13th grabbing eight final points in the closing event of the championships posting a time of 3:30.97 in the 400-free relay.

Emory University was the overall winner claiming the 2010 national championship.
