Ewing, NJ...On the heels of another successful season on the mat, The College of New Jersey was cited for its work in the classroom as six Lions were named to the 2009-10 National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III Scholar All-America Team. The six honorees are the most in program history.
Honored for their efforts were John Barnett (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Township), Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East), Tyler Branham (Newton, NJ/Kittatinny), Ed Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional), and Dan DiColo (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive).
Denver had a huge season for the Lions on the mat placing seventh at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships earning All-American honors at 184 pounds. He tied a school record with 45 wins on the season and was also a Metropolitan Conference champion.
Broderick was a Metropolitan Conference champ at heavyweight as he finished with a solid 26-9 record. He was also a national qualifier. He also led the team with 13 wins by fall.
Branham earned a spot on the Scholar All-American Team for the third straight year. He was 19-3 at 149 pounds before his season was cut short due to injury. During the season he collected his 100th career win and capped his tenure with the Lions with a record of 106-23.
DiColo, who also saw his season end early due to an injury, had a tremendous year to that point compiling a 31-4 record and spent most of the season ranked nationally at 157 pounds. This marked the second straight year DiColo earned a spot on the academic squad as he finished his career with 11 victories.
Bonitatis was a place winner at the Metropolitan Conference Championships at 157 pounds and finished the season with a 26-4 record. He is poised to add his name to the growing 100-win club as he enters his final season sitting on 96 wins.
Barnett is a two-time Scholar All-American and spent this season competing at 141 and 149 pounds. He capped the season with a record of 14-7, raising his career total to 66 wins.
In order to be named a Scholar All-American, a student must have maintained a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average and must place in the top four in the conference championships with at least a .500 overall record participating in half of the team's competitions. An athlete may also qualify with a .670 winning percentage in half of the team's competitions.
