Lexington, VA... The College of New Jersey men’s tennis team saw its season come to a close as the Lions fell to host Washington and Lee University by the score of 5-3 on Saturday in Lexington, VA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The loss capped TCNJ’s second at 10-7, while the 25th-ranked Generals moved to 16-8.
The Lions got off to a good start taking two out of three points in doubles play with the top team of Steven Fernandez (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and Stewart Fernandez (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) pulling out a 9-7 win, while the duo of Dean Thompson (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) and TJ Riley (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Moorestown) garnered an 8-4 triumph in the second position.
Steven Fernandez added TCNJ’s other win on the day at first singles as Washington and Lee’s Hayden White retired while holding a 4-3 edge in the first set.
The Generals then won four straight singles matches to pull out the win.
