Relay teams advance at opening day of NCAA Championships

Berea, Ohio … Members of The College of New Jersey men's and women's outdoor track and field competed in the opening day of the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Baldwin-Wallace College.

A pair of relay teams, the men's 4x400 and the women's 4x100, advanced to the finals after finishing in the top eight in their preliminary heats.

Graduates Steve Murray (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown), Rob McGowan (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.), junior Kyle Gilroy (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford Twp.), and junior Justin Worthing (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) donned TCNJ jerseys in the men's 4x400 relay and advanced to the finals posting a time of 3:13.11. The Lions contingency placed second in their heat, but also ran the second-best time overall and broke the school record that has stood since 1999. They will race in the finals on Saturday.

Gilroy ran the 400-meter hurdles in 53.18 to finish fourth in his heat and did not advance to the finals. He will race in the 110-meter hurdle preliminary heats tomorrow at 3:50 p.m.

Tiffany Etheredge
The women's 4x100 sprint relay team led by senior Priscilla Senyah (Sayreville, NJ/Sayreville), junior Miram Khan (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley), junior Tiffany Etheredge (Newark, NJ/Central), and freshman Kim Shelus (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) qualified for the finals. The squad placed second in their heat, but found their way into the finals on Saturday with the eighth fastest time overall at 47.55 seconds. 

Senyah will compete in the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash tomorrow while Khan will also race in the 100-meter dash.

Sophomore Brianna Brennan (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) earned a trip to the NCAA championships with a late-season surge. The experience of competing at the national level will undoubtedly assist moving into next year and motivate her to return. Brennan posted a toss of 37.35 meter, but did not qualify for the final round. Amanda Trieloff of Carroll University topped the field with a distance of 45.82. 

The 4x400 relay team of senior Jianna Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler), junior Kayla Ghanavati (Seaville, NJ/Ocean City), junior Meryl Wimberly (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck), and freshman Brielle Doremus (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) finished fourth in their heat with a time of 3:52.28 but did not advance to the finals.

Spadaccini and Wimberly will race in the 800-meter race tomorrow at 5:10 p.m.

Senior Michelle Wallace (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) will race in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event tomorrow at 5:45 p.m. She also earned a shot at the 5,000-meter national title on Saturday, May 29 at 3:55 p.m.

Sophomore Chris Medina (Lakewood, NJ/Monsignor Donovan) will race in the 100-meter dash tomorrow at 4:55 p.m.
