Shtemberg advances to quarterfinals at NCAA Championships

Senior Jackie Shtemberg won twice to move into the NCAA quarterfinals.

Fredericksburg, VA... The College of New Jersey's Jackie Shtemberg (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo) won both of her singles matches at the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship on Friday in Virginia as she catapulted her way into the quarterfinals.

Shtemberg got off to a great start in the tournament as the posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Sierra Krebsbach from Gustavus Adolphus College. The Lion senior then cruised through the second round making quick work of Pomona-Pitzer's Kara Wang winning 6-1, 6-0.

That win put Shtemberg in the quarters where she will face Carnegie Mellon's Lauren Chen for the second time in less than a week. Chen edged Shtemberg in a tough three-set match in the second round of the team tournament.

Play resumes on Saturday at Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, VA with Shtemberg taking the court at 9 a.m. with a win propelling her into the semis, which are set for noon.

Shtemberg is now 26-5 on the season and is one win shy of tying a career-high 27 set during her freshman campaign.

In doubles play, Shtemberg and sophomore Felice Trinh (Linden, NJ/Linden) got off to a little bit of a slow start dropping the opening set to UC Santa Cruz's Arianna Mokhtari and Taylor Mannix 6-3, but stormed right back to even the match at a set apiece with a 6-2 win in the second. In the third and deciding set, TCNJ's tandem led in the early going with a 2-1 edge, but the pair from Santa Cruz was able to bounce back to win the set 6-4.

The pair capped the season at 17-8 together.
