Berea, Ohio … Junior sprinter
Miriam Khan (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley) of The College of New Jersey earned the title of the fastest women in Division III sports as she raced to a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships at Baldwin-Wallace.
Khan earned the title of record-holder, All-American, and national champion all in under 12 seconds as she posted a blistering time of 11.67 seconds. The runner-up was Amanda LaRocca of Illinois Wesleyan who finished in 11.77 seconds.
It's the first time since Tiffany Clark won the 400-meter event in 2005 that a women from the Lions' outdoor track and field program claimed a national championship in an individual event. Khan bested her qualifying time by nearly two-tenths of a second and broke her own school record in the process.
The women's team placed eighth at the national championships amassing 27 overall points. Illinois Wesleyan topped the field with 54 points. TCNJ's men's team finished with six points and tied for 45th.
Three additional individual runners gained All-American status on the day. Senior
Jianna Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) placed second in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:08.05. She was followed by All-American
Meryl Wimberly (Farmingdale, NJ/Colts Neck), who placed fourth with a time of 2:11.05. The winner of the event, Marie Borner of Bethel University, finished with a time of 2:06.87
Earlier in the day, senior
Priscilla Senyah (Sayerville, NJ/Sayreville) added another All-American citation to her tremendous collegiate career by finishing seventh in the 100-meter hurdles. Senyah crossed the line in 14.45 seconds.
Khan and Senyah also earned All-American status along with teammates junior
Tiffany Etheredge (Newark, NJ/Central) and freshman
Kim Shelus (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) finishing seventh in the 4x100 relay with a time of 47.29.
Senior
Michelle Wallace (Emerson, NJ/Emerson) earned All-American honorable mention for her 13th place finish in the 5,000-meter race. Wallace posted a time of 17.47.95 to cap off her prolific career at TCNJ.
The men's 4x400 relay team of junior
Kyle Gilroy (Oak Ridge, NJ/West Milford Twp.), junior
Justin Worthing (West Orange, NJ/West Orange), and graduates
Steve Murray (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown), and Rob McGowan (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Twp.) placed third with a time of 3:13.67. Each of the four relay members earned All-American honors for their performances.
