Fredericksburg, VA... The College of New Jersey men's soccer team battled the University of Mary Washington for 120 minutes and left the field with a 1-1 tie in their opening game at the University of Mary Washington Classic.
Sophomore
Taylor Gregory (Sea Girt, NJ/Wall) notched the first goal of his collegiate career at the 71:54 mark of the contest to even the score at one goal a piece. TCNJ and UMW traded shots in regulation and the game remained deadlocked at one through two overtime periods.
The Lions seemed to have the better of play in overtime as junior transfer
Luigi Moriello (Ewing, NJ/Notre Dame) and senior
Andrew Lampitt (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) got off shots on net, but Eagle goalkeeper
Alec Constantine was up to the task making eight saves on the day. TCNJ outshot UMW 13-11 on the day.
Sophomore
Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) earned his first start between the pipes and allowed just one goal through regulation and overtime. Utman finished with two saves in the game.
Senior
T.L. Tutor gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the opening half as he netted an unassisted tally just over 32 minutes into the game. But the Lions kept the UMW offense in check the rest of way, a positive sign after giving up an uncharacteristic five goals against Drew University in the season opener.
UMW was coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday thanks to a pair of second-half goals by Tutor.
The Lions will play their second and final game of the tournament tomorrow (Sunday) at 1 p.m. against Lynchburg College. The Hornets (1-1) defeated Gettysburg College 2-1 earlier in the day.
