TCNJ knocks off two ranked opponents

Mike Kiley had a big win against Elizabethtown.
Elizabethtown, PA... The College of New Jersey wrestling team picked up two more dual meets running its winning streak to a modest four straight as the Lions got past a pair of ranked opponents on Tuesday in a quad meet held at Elizabethtown College.

The 15th-ranked Lions started the day with a narrow 22-12 triumph over 12th-ranked York (PA) College and then finished off the day topping 20th-ranked Elizabethtown College 22-18.

Those two wins put TCNJ at 8-1 on the season.

The Lions raced out to a 7-0 lead against York in the opening match of the day as freshman Steve Godine (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) won by decision at 125 and sophomore Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) followed with a 17-4 major decision at 133.

After the Spartans rallied to take a 9-7 lead, TCNJ reeled off four straight wins as Dave Kiley (Howell, NJ/Brick Memorial) at 157, Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) at 165, and Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) at 184 each won by decision, while Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) won by fall at 174 putting the Lions in front by a safe margin of 22-9.

TCNJ capped the day with a win over Elizabethtown as the Lions broke a 15-15 tie with back-to-back wins in the upper weight classes. Sophomore Mike Kiley (Howell, NJ/Brick Memorial) got the first of those at 184 pounds as he posted a 4-0 victory, while Denver won in convincing fashion at 197 with a 17-4 major decision. Those two wins secured the win for TCNJ as they led 22-15 heading into the final bout, which the Blue Jays won to close the final gap to 22-18.

The Lions had three wrestlers win both of their matches on the day as Herr, Bonitatis, and Denver each went 2-0, while Dave and Mike Kiley were both 1-0 on the day as was freshman KC Murphy (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley).
also won by pin in 4:15 at heavyweight.

TCNJ continues its busy week on Friday as they participate in the prestigious Budd Whitehill Duals hosted by Lycoming College.
