Ewing, NJ... The number 13 proved lucky for The College of New Jersey wrestling team as the Lions reeled off their 13th straight dual-meet win on Sunday with a 27-15 triumph over Springfield College.
The win puts 14th-ranked TCNJ at 17-1 on the season, while the 29th-ranked Pride dipped to 9-5 as they saw their modest five-match winning streak come to an end.
The Lions got off to a fast start in the match as freshman
Steve Godine (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park) won by fall in 2:00 at 125 pounds and sophomore
Dan Herr (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) followed with a 6-2 decision at 133 bumping TCNJ's lead to 9-0.
The teams began trading wins with the Pride sandwiching wins at 141 and 157 around win by TCNJ sophomore
John Darling (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) at 149. Darling won his bout with a 6-1 decision.
The Lions then got on a nice roll as senior
Justin Bonitatis (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) picked up a victory by injury default at 165 and sophomore
Brian Broderick (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) secured a 10-3 win at 174 extending TCNJ's overall lead to 21-6. The win by Bonitatis was his 30th of the season and the 127th of his career.
Junior
Mike Denver (Bayville, NJ/Central Regional) made it three straight wins for the hosts as he won by pin at 184 pounds needing only 2:11.
Springfield closed out the match winning the final two weight classes making the final margin 27-15.
The Lions are back on the mat Friday, February 4 as they head to 15th-ranked Wilkes University for a 7 p.m. dual meet.
