Galloway, NJ … Under what may have been the worst weather conditions for a championship race in recent memory, The College of New Jersey men's cross country team captured its 18
th consecutive New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at Richard Stockton College.
Led by a strong cast of seniors, the Lions fought through wind and rain to hold off formidable challenger Rowan University to claim the 2011 NJAC title.
TCNJ placed five runners in the top 10 finishers to lead all conference schools with 26 total points. Sophomore
Dominic Tasco (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) spearheaded the championship run with a second-place overall finish out of 94 runners. Tasco posted a time of 26:16.44, and was only bested by the event winner as Prof
Robert Rawls crossed the finish line first in 26:03.92.
After Tasco, the veteran Lions made certain the streak that began in 1994 would continue. Seniors
Andy Herschman (Hazlet, NJ/Raritan) and
Shaun McGeever (Lincroft, NJ/Middletown South) had key finishes and were instrumental in the title victory. Herschman placed fourth with a time of 26:17.30 and McGeever was close behind in fifth place with a finish of 26:20.45.
Junior
Andy Gallagher (Newfoundland, NJ/West Milford) finished sixth, completing the 8k race in 26:20.83 and senior
Rob Nihen (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) followed up his NJAC Runner of the Week honors with a ninth-place finish, clocking a time of 26:26.45.
TCNJ men's cross country has won every conference championship since 1994. Prior to that run, Rowan (then Glassboro State) won every title from 1974 to 1990, a string of 17 straight championships. The Lions eclipsed that streak with their 18
th title on Saturday.
TCNJ will compete next in the Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by St. Lawrence College on November 12.
