Galloway, NJ … In a driving rain, The College of New Jersey women's cross country team placed second at the 2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Richard Stockton College.
The Lions tallied 34 points, falling to Rowan University who seized the NJAC title with 21 points. The victory for the Profs marks their first championship since 1994 and ends a phenomenal streak of 16 consecutive titles for TCNJ.
Junior
Cathy Goncalves (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) led the Lions with a fourth place finish, posting a time of 22:30.61. Sophomore
Megan Flynn (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) and senior
Katie Nestor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) followed with fifth and sixth-place finishes, but Rowan took the top three spots to earn the victory. The Profs'
Vanessa Wright won the race with a time of 21:10.67.
Flynn registered a time of 22:31.70 in the 6k race and Nestor cross the finish line in 22:33.12.
Senior
Rachel Morris (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro) and sophomore
Anginelle Alabanza (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) also posted top 10 finishes. Morris completed the race in 22:49.16, while Alabanza recorded a time of 22:55.15. Senior
Allysa Bannon (Spotswood, NJ/Bishop Ahr) placed 12
th out of 73 runners with a time 23:06.16
TCNJ had won every NJAC championship since 1995. Prior to that run, Rowan had won three straight titles from 1992 – 1994.
The Lions will compete next in the Atlantic Regional Championships hosted by St. Lawrence University on November 12.
