Fitzsimmons fires no-hitter as Lions win twice

Orlando, FL... Pitcher Lauren Fitzsimmons (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) got the 2011 season started with a flash for The College of New Jersey softball team as junior tossed a no-hitter in the opener with a 2-0 gem against Elizabethtown College on Sunday in Florida.

The Lions followed that up with another impressive performance as they defeated Simmons College, 10-0.

TCNJ (2-0) is back on the field tomorrow with two more games facing Thiel College and Lebanon Valley College.

Fitzsimmons was strong from start to finish as she held the Blue Jays hitless and allowed only a walk in the seventh inning. She finished with 14 strikeouts against that lone walk.

TCNJ got the only run they would need in the second as senior Colleen Cawley (Riverton, NJ/Holy Cross) singled home Liz Huttner (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South).

The Lions doubled that advantage in the fifth as junior Crystal Lee (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Knolls) singled and scored on a base hit by Ashley Sogluizzo (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South).

Lee paced TCNJ at the plate with a pair of hits.

Fitzsimmons threw a perfect game on last year's spring trip with a five-inning effort in a win over Wisconsin Lutheran.

The Lions got the early jump on the Sharks scoring three runs in the first and then increased that margin to 5-0 in the second as Sogluizzo drilled a two-run home run.

Huttner drove in run with a base hit in the fifth before TCNJ tacked on four more runs in the sixth making it a 10-0 final. In that sixth inning, Sogluizzo and Michelle Casale (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) each tripled.

Sogluizzo went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs batted in, while Michelle Kent (Sparta, NJ/Pope John) also had two hits.

Freshman pitcher Alex Carisone (Branchburg, NJ/Rutgers Prep) won tossed a shutout for her first collegiate win as she allowed only three hits and fanned six.
