Lions dominate waters to secure fifth straight championship

Piscataway, NJ ... The College of New Jersey women's swimming and diving team captured its fifth consecutive title at the 2012 Metropolitan Conference Championships held at Rutgers University.
 
It was a complete performance during the three days of competition for TCNJ. In 13 individual swimming events, the Lions had a swimmer in every 'A' final, and had multiple swimmers in 11 of the 13 championship finals. TCNJ won both diving events and competed in all five relay finals, garnering a first-place finish, three second-place finishes and a third-place posting.l;
 
Junior diver Danica Roskos (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) was named MET Diver of the Meet while head coach Jennifer Harnett earned MET Coach of the Year. Diving coach Candace Gottlieb was tabbed MET Diving Coach of the Year.
 
Roskos won the 1-meter diving event with a score of 512.80. She also placed first in the 3-meter event on Friday. Sophomore Sabrina Lucchesi (Columbus, NJ/Notre Dame) took second place with a score of 457.80.
 
After winning the 100-breast on Saturday night, junior Kayleigh Shangle (Highland Park, NJ/Highland Park) returned to the starting blocks to sweep the breaststroke events with a 2:21.53 finish in the 200-breast. Her finish was an NCAA B-cut qualifier. Freshman Nicole Muha (Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen) also posted a B-cut time, tapping the wall in 2:24.15.
 
The Lions received a stellar performance in the 200-back as sophomore Hailey Growney (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) punched her ticket to the winner's circle, claiming the event with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:06.83. Junior Samantha Parlow (Brick NJ/Monsignor Donovan) registered a fifth-place finish in that same final with a time of 2:10.61.
 
Senior Laura Pierce (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) raced to a second-place finish in the 100-free by clocking an NCAA provisional time of 51.36. Classmate Melissa Hessler (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) took seventh in the event in 53.53.
 
Freshman Brennah Ross (Paoli, PA/Cyber Charter School) finished runner-up in the 200-butterfly event. Ross clocked an NCAA provisional time of 2:06.13. Senior Courtney Fuhro also raced in the 'A' final and took eighth place with a time of 2:13.96.
 
In the 1650 free, freshman Meghan Burke (Blauvelt, NY/Tappan Zee) and junior Jenny Zavoda (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) placed fourth and fifth in the event. Burke finished in 18:17.71, while Zavoda posted a time of 18:23.75.
 
The Lions capped the weekend in thrilling fashion by winning the final event of the 2012 METS. Pierce swam the final leg of the 400-free relay, posting a 50.45 to give TCNJ the win with an overall time of 3:30.10. Hessler, Ross, and Shangle also contributed to the victory.
 
The Lions will now wait to see who qualifies for the 2012 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships held in Indianapolis from March 21 through March 24.
