TCNJ enjoys success at Lions' Invitational

Ewing, NJ… The College of New Jersey women's outdoor track and field team enjoyed a fruitful day on campus as they excelled while hosting the Lions' Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
 
Freshman Michelle Cascio (Washington, NJ/Westwood Regional) performed extremely well placing fourth overall and first amongst Division III competitors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 59.45. Classmate Katie Johnston (Oakland, NJ/Indian Hills) also competed in the event and placed ninth overall (fifth in Division III) with a finish of 1:01.48.
 
In the 1500-meter event, junior Cathy Goncalves (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) placed third overall with a time of 4:46.57. It was her best time of the 2012 season. Sophomore Anginelle Alabanza (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) finished fifth overall in the race with a time of 4:49.47, and sophomore Megan Flynn (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) crossed the line in 4:54.18 to place tenth.
 
Senior Katie Nestor (Allendale, NJ/Northern Highlands) topped her best time in the 800-meter event and also bested the field of Division III competitors. Nestor placed sixth overall with a time of 2:16.49. Classmate Cassandra Valdes (Scotch Plains, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood) also posted a season-best at 2:19.97 to place 16th overall and second-fastest result in Division III.
 
Junior Rachel Morris (Marlboro, NJ/Colts Neck) performed well in the 5000-meter distance event. She posted a time of 18:53.89, which placed her sixth overall and second in the mix of Division III runners.
 
Senior Brianna Brenna (Marlton, NJ/Holy Cross) had her best throw of the season, marking 39.28 meters to place fourth overall and tops amongst Division III athletes. The toss by Brennan is the 27th best in Division III this spring. Junior Julianne Grandal (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) was eighth overall with a throw of 35.36.
 
Sophomore Erica Roberts (Newark, NJ/Science Park) displayed her versatility during the invitational in several events. Roberts had the best Division III finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.84 seconds. She also took second overall (and first in Division III) in the long jump. She landed 5.45 meters from the stripe to register her best distance of the spring.
 
Junior Mary Chismar (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) placed fourth overall in the shot put event with a distance of 12.16 meters. Amanda To (Sewell, NJ/Washington Twp.) had the second-best Division III distance in hammer throw in posting 36.65 meters.
 
Roberts also spearheaded the 4x100 relay team of herself, sophomore Katie Knight (Ocean Twp, NJ/Ocean Township), Cascio, and sophomore Jackie Chester (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) that took top honors with a time of 50.03.
 
The Lions will now gear up for the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championships next Saturday. The meet will be held at Richard Stockton College.
