Lions receive regional, gold glove honors

2012 Mid-Atlantic Regional teams

Ewing, NJ … Five players from The College of New Jersey baseball team were selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic All-Region teams.

Catcher Mike Galeotafiore (Brick, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) was named to Mid-Atlantic All-Region Second Team. Second baseman Scott Kelly (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor-North) and outfielder Michael Murphy (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) were both named to the Mid-Atlantic All-Region Third Team.

First baseman Jimmy Ruzich (Verona, NJ/Montclair Kimberley Academy) and pitcher Eric Lewis (Wantagh, NY/W.C. Mepham) were named to the 2012 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove First Team.

Galeotafiore, who was the New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year, batted .341 with 57 hits and 18 doubles. He belted a pair of round-trippers, drove in 24 runs, and scored 32 times. A four-year starting catcher, Galeotafiore threw out 13 runners this season and allowed just two passed balls. It marked the second straight year and third overall that Galeotafiore was named to the regional second team.

Galeotafiore finished his career with a .354 lifetime batting average, 218 hits, 60 doubles, 12 home runs, and 127 runs batted in.

Kelly had another standout season, leading the team with a .345 batting average, 60 hits, and a career-high 38 stolen bases. The second baseman ranked 10th in the nation in swipes and is three shy of the all-time program record. Kelly scored a team-best 40 runs and walked 26 times. He was also a third team regional honoree in 2011.

Murphy, a First Team All-NJAC selection the past two years, hit .341 with 56 hits, 12 doubles, 29 runs batted in, and 29 runs scored.  He also had three sacrifice flies, nine stolen bases, and three outfield assists.

Ruzich was a tremendous commodity on defense for the Lions during the 2012 season. He made just three errors in 424 chances, compiling 390 putouts and 30 assists for a .993 fielding percentage. A feature to his defense that will not appear in his stat-line are the number of balls picked out the dirt and swipe-tags off the bag that aided his infield and pitching staff.

Ruzich also finished his tenure at TCNJ with a .314 career batting average, 195 hits, 36 doubles, 129 runs batted in, and 142 runs scored. His career fielding percentage was .982 with 1,339 putouts.

Lewis fielded his position exceptionally well compiling 20 assists and nine putouts, while picking off four runners. In a 3-1 victory over Aurora University, he had five putouts and four assists in the game. Lewis also led the team in wins in 2012 with a 5-3 overall record. He registered a 2.28 earned run average and walked just 24 in a team-high 75 innings pitched. Lewis did not have an error all season and finished his career with 10 wins on the mound.

The Lions qualified for the New Jersey Athletic Conference playoffs and finished their season with a 23-20 overall record.
