Agyapong races closer to Olympic berth

Ashhad Agyapong

Ewing, NJ … Ashhad Agyapong, an assistant coach for The College of New Jersey track and field program, is closing fast on attaining his dream of competing in the Olympics.

Agyapong competed earlier this month in a National Training Center Last Chance Meet held in Claremont, Florida. He placed third overall in the 200-meter event with a time of 20.38 seconds. That posting is one of the top 25 times in the world and makes him a legitimate contender to qualify for the finals at the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games in July.

Coming off of his standout performance in Flordia, Agyapong will travel to Kumasi, Ghana to compete in the Ghana National Championships on June 14 and 15. He will also travel to the All-African Championships held June 26 through July 1 in Porto Novo, Benin.

Agyapong began his track and field career during his sophomore year of high school under the direction of Trenton coach Alphonso Jennings. He went on to attend the University of Rhode Island and competed at the USA Junior National Championships during his freshman year. Agyapong left URI a 16-time Atlantic 10 Conference champion and a nine-time New England Region Champion. He qualified for the NCAA Division I Indoor and Outdoor Championships as well as the USA Senior National Championships during his senior season.

Since 2010, Agayapong has been training with AMK International, a competitive group of track and field athletes that trains professionally in New Jersey. AMK was established by Justin Lindsey, who is a full-time assistant track and field coach at The College of New Jersey. Former national champion and TCNJ graduate Miriam Khan '11 also trains with AMK and is hoping to qualify to compete for Italy at the Olympic games.
