Ewing, NJ ... Three freshmen from The College of New Jersey were honored by the New Jersey Athletic Conference for their performances during the week ending April 14, 2013.
Jamie Purcell (Nutley, NJ/Mt. Saint Dominic Academy) and
Ashtin Helmer (Succasunna, NJ/Roxbury) from the Lions' softball team and right-handed pitcher
Evan Edelman (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) from the baseball squad were recognized by the NJAC commissioner for the efforts.
Purcell was named Rookie of the Week for compiling seven hits in 13 at bats (.538) during four conference games last week. She hit safely in all four games, knocked in two runs, and scored a pair.
Helmer was 2-1 on the week, including a five-inning no-hitter against Rutgers University-Camden. She gave up just one earned run in 20 innings pitched and struck out 15 to earn NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time this season.
Edelman was also named NJAC Rookie of the Week as he tossed a complete game en route to a 14-1 victory over St. Joseph's-Long Island. He surrendered an unearned run in the first inning and follwowed with eight scoreless innings while striking out seven. Edelman also came in relief on Sunday after an injury to TCNJ's starting pitcher in the first and pitched five and one-third innings. The rookie hurler pitched a total of 14 and one-third innings during the week and gave up just three earned runs.
