Dr. Sharon Beverly

Ewing, NJ … The College of New Jersey Vice President for Student Affairs Amy Hecht has announced the appointment of Dr. Sharon Beverly as the new assistant vice president for student affairs and executive director of athletics and recreation for the College. She will begin her tenure on March 1st.

"I am thrilled to welcome Sharon to TCNJ," said Hecht. "Over the last 25 years, she has been successful in strengthening athletic programs, while remaining committed to the academic integrity of the institution. Her qualifications, past experiences, and her ability to pursue excellence, both on and off the field, made her an ideal choice for The College of New Jersey."

Dr. Beverly comes to the College from Vassar, where she has served as director of athletics and physical education since July of 2004. In that capacity, she has worked tirelessly to build the school's athletic program, greatly improving image, awareness and the quality of the athletic facilities. Under her leadership, the Brewers have steadily climbed in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup, which is awarded annually to the nation's best overall collegiate athletics program. In 2010, she was named ECAC Woman Administrator of the Year.

"TCNJ's national reputation for academic and athletic excellence, the visionary leadership of President Gitenstein, and the ambitious mindset of Dr. Hecht made the decision to join The College of New Jersey family an easy one for me," Beverly said. "I look forward to working with our outstanding coaching staff, student-athletes, and the entire TCNJ community as we look to build upon our legacy of success."

Prior to her position as athletic director, Dr. Beverly served from 2002 – 2004 as Vassar's associate director of athletics and senior woman administrator. She held that same position at New Jersey Institute of Technology, along with being the head women's basketball coach, from 1999-2002. Dr. Beverly was also the head women's basketball coach at Fairleigh Dickinson University – Teaneck from 1988 – 1999. She was inducted into the FDU Hall of Fame in 2012.

In addition to her experience on the court and in athletic administration, Dr. Beverly has served as Chairperson of the NCAA Woman of the Year Committee, the NCAA Division III Nominating Committee, and was as a member of the NCAA Division III Convention Planning Subcommittee. Dr. Beverly has worked towards fostering equity in the college athletics profession. She is a member of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

Dr. Beverly is a 1979 graduate of Queens College, where she was a student-athlete on the women's basketball team. She played professionally in Europe and with the New Jersey Gems before continuing her education. Dr. Beverly received a master's degree in education from Queens College in 1987 and a Ph.D. in leadership for higher education from Capella University in 2010.
