TCNJ battles at Metro Duals

Bristol, RI ... The College of New Jersey wrestling team posted a 2-1 record in three matches at the METRO/New England Duals hosted by Roger Williams University.

The 10th-ranked Lions (15-2) opened with a 49-3 victory over Bridgewater State University before downing 16th-ranked Williams College 22-13. They then suffered a tough-to-swallow setback against third-ranked Roger Williams by criteria after the final score was deadlocked at 15. Roger Williams accrued more points overall per bout and was awarded the match victory based on that criteria.

In the opener, the Lions pinned four opponents as freshman Luis Rivera (Landisville, NJ/Buena), sophomore Austin Maltez (Manalapan, NJ/Colts Neck), junior Dan Wojtaszek (Brick, NJ/Brick Twp), and rookie Alex Mirabella (Fanwood, NJ/Scotch Plains-Fanwood)  all won by fall. Rivera ended his bout at 133 pounds in 3:45 and following at 141, Maltez pinned Jacoc Mullin-Bernstei at the 4:31 mark. Wojtaszek stopped his opponent in 2:54, while it took Mirabella just 1:01 to poin Chinaka Ekechikwu.

It was a back-and-forth battle with Williams College and the score was even at nine through the first six bouts. Senior Doug Hamann (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Memorial.) won by technical fall (26-9) to give the Lions a five-point cushion. Leading by a point, sophomore Constantine Rissiotis (Monmouth Jct., NJ/South Brunswick) posted a major decision before classmate Kyle Cocozza (Farmingdale, NJ/Howell) won by technical fall (20-5) to secure the Lions victory.

The match was intense against third-ranked Roger Williams. Two bouts were settled in overtime, while four were decided by a single point. Both teams garnered 15 points through 10 weight classes, and the Hawks were awarded a team point for outscoring the Lions 49-39 overall to register the win.

TCNJ is back in action this Friday, February 5 when they host Wilkes University at 7:30 p.m. in Packer Hall.
