Gettysburg, PA… It is often rare in sporting events that a highly anticipated match-up lives up to the hype, but the game Thursday afternoon between the second ranked Lions of The College of New Jersey and the top ranked Bullets of Gettysburg College lived up to every bit of the pre-game expectations. Senior
Mia Blackman (Arlington, VA / Field School) broke a 5-5 tie with 7:35 remaining and the Lions didn't look back in a 7-6 victory. The win improves TCNJ's record to 5-1, the Bullets drop to 8-1.
Freshman
Alexandria Fitzpatrick (Burlington, NJ / Northern Burlington) opened the scoring a minute and a half into the game, scoring her third of the season. The Bullets immediately countered, scoring the next three goals to secure a two goal advantage.
Blackman then got hot from the arc scoring twice on free position attempts. Sophomore
Kathleen Jaeger (Whitehouse Station, NJ / Hunterdon Central) scored her team-leading 18
th goal of the season and classmate
Miranda Chrone (Morrestown, NJ / Morrestown) made a save on a Bullet free position in the waning seconds of the first half to give the Lions a 4-3 lead.
Gettysburg would tie the score at 4-4 coming out of the break. Then, following a goal from freshman
Allie Gorman (Sicklerville, NJ / Washington Twp.), the Bullets tied the game again at 5-5 to set up Blackman's heroics.
After Blackman's third of the game gave TCNJ the lead, sophomore
Erin Harvey (Mount Laurel, NJ / Lenape) drew a foul with the Bullets goalie attempting a double team to set up a catch-and-shoot on an empty net for junior
Emily Kratz (Robbinsville, NJ / Robbinsville).
The Bullets did not go down without a fight. Emma Christie netted her fourth of the game with 1:25 remaining and gained control of the ensuing draw. In the final seconds, junior
Elizabeth Morrison (Stonington, CT/Stonington) knocked down a pass, allowing sophomore
Brooke Lionetti (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) to scoop up the ground ball, deliver a pass, which eventually enabled Morrison to race upfield to run out the clock.
TCNJ returns home Tuesday, April 4 at 7:00 PM when they host Stevens Institute of Technology.
